Weather it’s winter or spring, clean-cut shrubbery and trees can go a long way for curb appeal, for homeowners searching for their next dream home. In fact, homeowners are more apt to tour a home that looks inviting and welcoming than one that is un-cut.

While mulching and mowing goes a long way, here are other aspects of landscaping to look for when searching for your next dream home.

The Lowdown on Trees and Plants

Did you know that well-matured trees an increase the value of a home up to 10-20%. Why? Trees provide shade and keep a house cool in the hot summer months. Evergreens provide green year-round and do not require any maintenance. While some deciduous trees drop leaves, full branches, or sweet gumballs.

While you are pursuing the backyard, check trees to make sure they are not ill or diseases, and make sure the roots haven’t buckled the driveway. Be sure there are no trees or bushes planted right next to the house foundation.

Are the plants and shrubbery native perennials and annuals or will ivy vines overtake your home?

Mind the Fences

Fences can be a good add-on, especially if you have an outdoor dog that requires some room to roam. Consider the type of fence that is built, are there any places that need repair, does it provide privacy or does it impede your view?

Does the landscaping include non-essentials such as outdoor lighting? Lighting not only provides a beautiful landscape, but it also may increase security and prevents slips or falls during the evening hours.

Walkways

Walkways are the gateway to your home, for your family as well as outside guests. Stone walkways or even stepping-stones add aesthetic value. Is the walkway up to the standards of the neighborhood?

For the holiday season, poinsettias, evergreens, wintergreen, or holly makes a home come alive and more inviting. Where as spring brings its own color of red, purple, and yellow flowers and plants.
