What to Do on a Technology Free Day

  • What to Do on a Technology Free Day December 10, 2015 / Community Living

With so many options for technology: flat screen tvs, I-pods, I-phones, laptops, and nearly every home appliance that uses technology, it’s hard to get away. Most of us are addicted to technology. Remember that time when you were walking across the street looking down at your phone?

Did you know that going through digital detox can improve your health? It’s no wonder with all the negative stories or reading trolling comments that lead to a destructive downward spiral.

Many families are struggling with the balance of face-to-face conversations and communicating over technology. Even for those who are living alone or with roommates, getting sucked into the latest social media platform can deplete time and energy.

Many families are now implementing a “technology free day” or even just a dinner without technology.

What to do instead? Here are some fun options:

    1. Making a Meal
Most of the time, we pick up dinner on the go or make dinner in the microwave. Instead, include every member of the family in visiting a local farmer’s market, planning a recipe, and making dinner.
    1. Family Games
Dust off that Scrabble Game or Trivial Pursuit. Games create fun ways for family to spend time together, instead on separate screens.
    1. Enjoy the Neighborhood
Go for a walk around your neighborhood or join in on a community event, festival, or concert. Getting to know your neighbors better creates a sense of community, rather than isolation.
    1. Sound of Silence

With so many distractions, rarely do we spend any time in silence. Take a minute to relish in the calm.

    1. Purging What Isn’t Necessary
A technology free weekend gives time to a home project, cleaning, or organizing. Pitching out what doesn’t serve you anymore can be cathartic.

While technology keeps us connected to those around the globe, it’s also vital we unplug every once in a while.
